I have filmed at Villa Cimbrone more than once, and it is the venue in Ravello I am asked about most.
Everyone already knows it is beautiful — that part does not need me. What follows is the other half: how a wedding day actually runs inside this villa, where the ceremony can go, when to be on the Terrace of Infinity, and the one question I tell every couple to ask before they sign anything.
A Venue Suspended Between Sky and Sea
The Question to Ask Before You Book: Will Tourists Be There?
Villa Cimbrone sits at the far end of Ravello, and the whole property is built to lead you outward: cloister, gardens, and finally the Terrace of Infinity hanging over the coast.
If you hold your ceremony here rather than in a church, there are two gardens to choose between. The first is nearer the entrance, in front of the cloister — enclosed, green, sheltered. The second is at the far end of the villa, beside the Terrace of Infinity, where the horizon does the work behind you. They give you two completely different films, and the choice is worth making deliberately rather than by default.
One more thing worth saying plainly: this villa needs very little help. Couples often arrive planning elaborate installations, and then discover that the architecture and the gardens are already carrying the frame. Spend where it counts and let the place do the rest.
This is the most useful thing I can tell you about Villa Cimbrone, and it is the thing couples most often do not think to ask.
The villa can be booked in two ways. Some couples take the entire property for the whole day, exclusively. Others book it from a set hour onwards — which is cheaper, and perfectly workable, but it means that until that hour the villa stays open to visitors, who walk the gardens as usual while you get ready privately in the rooms set aside for you.
Either arrangement can make a beautiful day. What matters, in both cases, is one thing: from the ceremony onwards, public access must be closed.
Ask for that in writing, and confirm the exact hour. It is the difference between a ceremony that belongs to you and one with strangers drifting through the background of every frame — and once the day has started, there is nothing a videographer can do to fix it.
First Look in the Cloister
The wedding in the film above had its ceremony in church, and the couple did their first look here, in the cloister of Villa Cimbrone.
It is the right room for it. The cloister is enclosed and quiet, the light comes down softly through the arches, and there is nowhere for the moment to escape to. A first look needs somewhere the two of you can stop being watched for a minute, and this is one of the few places in a venue this famous where that is genuinely possible.
Aperitivo on the Terrace of Infinity
The Terrace of Infinity is the reason most people know this villa, and it deserves the reputation. It is also, for a film, the single strongest thing Villa Cimbrone gives you.
But when you go matters as much as going. My advice, every time: put the aperitivo on the terrace close to sunset, not in the middle of the afternoon. Two reasons, and they both count. The heat drops, so your guests are actually comfortable standing out there. And the light turns — the busts along the balustrade catch it from the side, and the sea behind goes from flat white to gold. It is the same terrace, and it is not the same place at all.
Dinner and Celebration in the Crypt
After sunset the day moves inside, and the crypt is where dinner usually happens.
The rooms of Villa Cimbrone are beautiful throughout, but the crypt is the one that surprises people. Vaulted, stone, lit low — it is genuinely atmospheric, and it changes the register of the evening completely after hours spent under an open sky. On film that contrast is a gift: the day opens wide and bright and closes warm and enclosed.
Choosing Your Date: The One Real Risk
If you are considering Villa Cimbrone, think hard about the time of year.
The interiors are good — better than good — but that is not why you would choose this villa. You choose it for the gardens, the cloister and the terrace, and all three of them are outdoors. A date in a season when the weather can turn takes the best of the venue away from you and leaves you with the part you were not paying for.
It is the one piece of advice I give every couple asking about this place: pick the date for the outdoor spaces, not around them.
