Villa Antiche Mura stands on the cliff above Sorrento, wrapped in an old citrus grove, its terraces opening onto the Gulf of Naples with Vesuvius on the far shore. I am Ivan Caiazza, a wedding videographer based on this coast, and this is a villa I come back to — often, and gladly.
What makes it unusual is not only the view. Around Sorrento a wedding day is often spread between a church, a villa and a restaurant, and a good part of it disappears into cars and coastal roads. Here the day holds together in one place: guests arrive, and they stay. The terraces
Ceremonies happen outside, facing the water. What a camera gets here is depth: the couple in the foreground, the gulf behind them, Vesuvius drawing the horizon. The light travels from white to gold across the late afternoon, and the same terrace reads as two different places between five and seven o’clock.
The citrus grove
Lemon trees wrap the property, and they solve the problem most cliffside venues have — shade. In the hardest hours of the afternoon, portraits move under the trees, where the light softens and the green does half the work.
The steps
The staircase at the front of the villa is where the group photograph happens, guests on two tiers with the couple at the centre. On film it is also the natural place for an entrance, and for the moment a whole crowd turns to look at one person.
Indoors
The interiors are classical rather than modern — tiled floors, high ceilings, a lobby and a bar that carry a reception when the evening cools or the wind comes up off the water. The tiled morning room is the one I like most for the quiet part of the day, before anything has started.
