I filmed Chance and John’s wedding at Tenuta Monaciano last year, and I will say plainly what I usually keep to myself: it is one of the best weddings I have ever filmed.
Not only because of the estate, though the estate is extraordinary. It was the couple and the atmosphere they built around themselves — two Americans who both work in entertainment, and who turned several days in Chianti into something nobody in the room is going to forget. What follows is the other half of it: the venue itself, the region around it, and why I would send a couple here before almost anywhere else in Tuscany.
A Timeless Wedding at Tenuta Monaciano
Tenuta Monaciano sits in the Chianti countryside near Siena, and it is the kind of estate that does not need to be dressed up to look like anything other than itself.
Stone, cypresses, hills that keep going past where you can see, and a scale large enough to hold a multi-day celebration without ever feeling like a venue running an event. Chance and John held their ceremony in a natural amphitheatre on the property — the ground does the work, every guest can see, and nothing had to be built to make it happen.
For a film, an estate like this changes the arithmetic. Everything is on site, so no part of the day disappears into cars, and the story keeps its thread from the morning through to the last dance.
Chianti Is the Best Part of Tuscany to Film
This is a personal opinion and I will own it: the Chianti is the most beautiful part of Tuscany to work in, and the finest venues I have seen anywhere in this region are all inside it.
What makes it work on film is consistency. The hills, the cypress lines, the stone, the way the light lies along a valley in the evening — it is the Tuscany people already have in their heads before they arrive, and it holds together from the first hour of the morning to the last of the night. You are never fighting the background to make a frame work.
Chianti or Florence? Why I Would Choose the Countryside
Couples planning a Tuscan wedding usually end up choosing between the countryside and Florence, and I have a clear view on it.
Florence is magnificent, and I film there. But it is a city that receives millions of visitors a year, and a wedding held in it shares its streets with all of them. The countryside gives you something the city cannot: a version of Tuscany that is unmistakably itself, without tourism at the edge of every frame.
If what drew you to Tuscany in the first place was the idea of hills, stone and long evenings, the Chianti is that idea in its purest form. Florence is a beautiful city that happens to be in Tuscany. The Chianti is Tuscany.
The Rain Question: Why Tuscany Is Different
Every couple planning an outdoor wedding asks about rain, and in most destinations the honest answer is that a wet day costs you something real.
Tuscany is one of the few places where that is not quite true. The interiors of an estate like Tenuta Monaciano — stone rooms, vaulted ceilings, old halls that have been there for centuries — are as beautiful as the gardens outside them. A day that moves indoors here does not feel like a fallback. It feels like a warmer, more enclosed version of the same wedding, and nothing about it jars.
That is genuinely worth knowing when you are choosing a date, and it is one of the reasons I recommend this region so easily. In the Chianti you are not gambling the entire look of your wedding on a forecast.
